Goldman Sachs Gives (GSG), the firms donor-advised fund, has committed $20 million over a five-year period to fund a network of nonprofits helping returning, wounded veterans reintegrate into the workforce and civilian life. This initiative is focusing on job placement and readiness, and family support and counseling. GSG’s partners in the initiative include The Mission Continues, to provide service-based non-profit fellowships to returning, wounded veterans, Vets Prevail, to provide online mental health counseling and resources, ThanksUSA, offering academic assistance to family members of active service members, and DonorsChoose.org, supporting projects for students in military classrooms around the country.
Job Readiness and Commercial Success
Goldman Sachs has partnered with the Philadelphia-based Wall Street Warfighters Foundation since its inception one year ago to help ensure that service disabled veterans have the opportunities necessary to re-enter the workforce and pursue careers in the financial sector. Its mission is to identify, develop, and place disabled veterans in long-term professions in the financial services industry following their military service. The firm is also sponsoring service-disabled veteran owned brokerage/asset manager Drexel Hamilton, LLC (with which the Wall Street Warfighters Foundation shares offices) for the US Treasury’s Mentor-Protégé program, which aims to help minority and service-disabled firms expand their business relationships with the US Treasury and learn from a larger "mentor" firm. The Goldman Sachs Veterans Internship Program (GS VIP) is an eight week internship providing professional skills training and education for transitioning military men and women. This program offers a guided period of exploration and skills cultivation in a new and dynamic work environment. Program participants will explore career paths while acquainting themselves with financial markets and products, gain applied work experience and expand their professional networks through programming and events.
Recruitment and Retention
The recruitment and retention of veterans, including those currently in the National Guard and Reserve, is a priority for the firm. We continue to build awareness among our people of the leadership, technical skills and cultural attributes veterans bring to our workplace. Through our partnership with VOWS, and with other organizations and conferences, we hope to expand the growing base of veterans at Goldman Sachs and address challenges they may face as they transition into the global financial services industry.
Networking and Mentorship
The firm supports a formal veteran’s affinity network - the Goldman Sachs Veterans Network. The Network helps recruit talented troops who are transitioning to the civilian workforce and works internally to enhance the professional development and retention of veterans at the firm—including those currently serving in the Guard and Reserve. The Network also advises the firm on military-related engagement such as charitable organizations, veteran-owned business partnerships and community service to ensure that Goldman Sachs is a military employer-of-choice and a corporate leader on commitment to veterans.
Through Community TeamWorks, Goldman Sachs volunteers engage in service projects with Veteran-related organizations to make meaningful impact in our communities. Partner organizations and corresponding projects for Community TeamWorks 2012 include: the USO of Metropolitan New York, where volunteers will serve hot dogs and refreshments to active duty military and veterans during Fleet Week; Jericho Project, where participants will serve in a range of projects from hosting a veterans’ computer and career fair to outfitting apartments with new linens, dishes and cookware in a supportive housing residence for homeless veterans; and Pony Power Therapy, where volunteers will groom and tack horses and then trot alongside veterans during their weekly ‘Horses for Heroes’ session.
